of the Territorial Board of Agriculture and Forestry and the University of Hawaii. Manuscript received February 28, 1947. 2 The author completed most of the work on this paper while on the Department of Botany staff, University of Hawaii, and finished the manuscript at the University of California, Berkeley, with the aid of the excellent algal herbarium (cited as U. C. Herb.) and library at the latter institution. MARINE ALGAE FROM the Hawaiian Islands (in older literature, the Sandwich Islands) have been colJected or studied by a few phycologists. Brackish-water species, however, although essentially marine in relationship, have not been systematically studied for this area. The present study of the brackish-water species was begun late in 1943, in connection with a survey co-operatively con5iucted by the University of Hawaii and the Territorial Board of Agriculture and Forestry, on fishponds bordering' the ocean. At first, two , ponds on the island of Oahu were selected for study. In the following year, however, more data and investigation of other ponds seemed desirable. Three additional ponds on Oahu and eight on the island of Molokai were selected and included in the survey. The study of algae, as well as that of animal life, was thus extended to include all these fishponds. It soon became apparent that the variety of algal forms present in the chosen ponds constituted so large a problem that it would be best to enlist the aid of certain specialists. Myxophyceae were sent to Francis Drouet of the Chicago Natural History Brackish-Water Algae from the Hawaiian Islands!

Hawaiian Marine Bioinvasions: A Preliminary Assessment1

Through the Hawaii Biological Survey at Bishop Museum, a count of the total numbers of species in the Hawaiian Archipelago has been accumulated, with the latest listing (1999) totalling 23,150, of which 5047 are nonindigenous species (Eldredge 2000). For the nonindigenous marine and estuarine species, we have been accumulating information from the literature, museum specimens, and through field...

Stream Macroalgae of the Hawaiian Islands: A Floristic Survey

Between January 2001 and May 2003, 167 stream segments on the islands of Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, and Hawai‘i were sampled for stream macroalgae and measured for a series of physical and chemical conditions. Conditions ranged more widely than previously reported, which is likely due to the greater diversity of habitats accessed and the year-round sampling representation in this study. Water tempera...

Marine Algae of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands!

Reexamination of some previous collections of marine algae from the Northwest Hawaiian Islands (NWHI), also known as the Leeward Hawaiian Islands, and the addition of more recent collections have resulted in recognition of 48 taxa of Chlorophyta (green algae), with eight new records for the NWHI; 33 taxa of Phaeophyta (brown algae), with seven new records; and 124 species ofRhodophyta (red alga...

Macroalgae from 23 Stream Segments in the Hawaiian Islands

Twenty-three stream segments (seven on O'ahu, eight on Kaua'i, and eight on Hawai'i) were sampled for macroalgae in the Hawaiian Islands. Stream segments ranged greatly in size from 1.2 to 40 m in width. Water temperature was uniformly warm (17-24°C), but other chemical parameters differed from site to site (pH 5.5-8.9, specific conductance 20-200 IlS . cmI ). Mean species richness per site was...

New Records of Ahermatypic Corals (Scleractinia) from the Hawaiian and Line Islands

A CRITICAL CHECKLIST of the 54 species of ahermatypic Scleractinia known from the Hawaiian Islands is given. Based on a collection of approximately 1,150 specimens from 186 stations, new records are documented for 42 of these species, including 19 new records for the Hawaiian Islands, 8 of these being new species. A synonymy, discussion, and distribution are given for each of the 42 species col...
